Diet Related Heart Disease in Pets: What You Need to Know

You may have seen recent reports regarding diet related heart disease in pets. These reports can be alarming but please don’t panic. The FDA is monitoring these events, although they are unsure of the exact mechanism, it is related to grain free diets with added legumes (peas and/or lentils), and affected pets can develop a specific heart problem called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Dog food brands listed 10 times or more in the report:

  • Acana
  • Zignature
  • Taste of the Wild
  • 4Health
  • Earthborn Holistic
  • Blue Buffalo
  • Nature’s Domain
  • Fromm
  • Merrick
  • California Natural
  • Natural Balance
  • Orijen
  • Nature’s Variety
  • NutriSource
  • Nutro
  • Rachael Ray Nutrish

If you have been feeding a diet with these ingredients, particularly any brands on the above list, please schedule an office visit for your pet to check their heart and discuss their diet. If we suspect a problem, there’s specific testing to check for DCM.

Diet related DCM can be deadly, but if diagnosed early it responds to treatment. We want your pets to live their best lives, and if you have questions or concerns, please schedule an appointment.
