Beating Doggy Boredom

Did you know that boredom is often a factor in bad dog behaviors, like digging and chewing? Our canine buddies are quite smart and inquisitive. If your pet doesn’t have anything to do but stare at the walls, he may start making mischief just to entertain himself. Read on for some great tips from a Sugar Land, TX vet on beating doggy boredom.

Make sure your pooch has lots of fun toys to play with. Rotate Fido’s playthings out regularly to keep things fun and fresh for him.

Play Games

Just like kids, dogs love playing games. Here’s a fun one to try: tell Fido to Sit or Lay Down, and let him watch you hide treats around the room. Then, let your furry buddy amuse himself by sniffing them out. Tell your pup to ‘Search,’ so he associates the command with the treasure hunt. Once your dog has the hang of it, you can start placing things in other rooms. You can also play Hide and Seek or Guess Which Hand The Treat Is In?

Kong Toy

Kong toys are a wonderful boredom buster! Fill one with peanut butter or broth, and put it in the freezer. You can also use canned dog food, yogurt, or kibble. Fido may spend hours trying to get his snack!

Teach Fido To Pick Up After Himself

Many dogs love learning new things! Start with showing Fido basic obedience commands. Then, you can move on to showing him cute tricks or more useful commands. For example, you can teach him to pick up his toys and put them into a basket. Start by teaching your furry pal the Drop it command. Then, have him drop things over a basket.

Puzzle Toys

Puzzle toys are another great way to keep Fido entertained. You can buy some, or make your own. Here’s an easy one: put a few pieces of kibble in each spot of a muffin tin. Then, cover them with tennis balls. Instant happy dog! Look online for more great DIY options.

Regular walks are also great for our canine friends. Even if Fido has a yard to play in, he’ll benefit from the activity, fresh air, and change of scenery. It’s good exercise for you, too!
