Choosing Fido’s Halloween Costume

Halloween is just around the corner! Are you considering getting your dog a costume to wear? Fido makes a pretty cute dinosaur. He’s also been a sailor, a spider, and a taco, to name a few. Just be sure to put your pet’s comfort and safety first. Read on as a local Sugar Land, TX vet offers some helpful tips on choosing Fido’s Halloween outfit.

Before you go shopping for Fido, you’ll need to get his measurements. Text them to yourself, so you always have them with you. Make sure your furry friend’s costume fits comfortable, and is not too tight. It also should not restrict his vision or movements.

We recommend choosing a machine-washable fabric. Don’t get anything that may be too hot. Remember, Fido is already wearing a fur coat!

There are some definite safety concerns to keep in mind when dressing your dog. Avoid anything with buttons. Dogs sometimes try to eat them, which can be very dangerous. Zippers are also best avoided, as they can catch in Fido’s fur. Needless to say, that could be quite painful for your pet! You’ll also want to stay away from anything with dangling ropes or threads, as well as anything that could be flammable. Stick with things offered by pet stores: these will have been designed with your dogs’ comfort and safety in mind.

Picking The Outfit

Have some fun when choosing your furry buddy’s costume! Look for something that works with your pup’s personality. You can even choose an outfit that complements your own costume.

Fido’s Opinion

Make sure that your canine buddy has a say in his costume. If Fido doesn’t like wearing clothes, don’t force him to dress up. He’ll still be adorable with a little tie or bandana around his neck!

Keep a very close eye on your furry pal once he is dressed. Watch for signs that he is feeling hot or frightened. If you see any indication that Fido is feeling uncomfortable in his outfit, immediately take it off and give him some water and perhaps a doggy biscuit. (Tip: When you have your canine companion dressed, take a picture right away. That way, if you have to take your dog’s outfit off early, you’ll already have that adorable photo. )
