Keeping Kitty Cool

Summers here in Texas are no joke. Actually, this can be a dangerous time of year for cats. Fluffy doesn’t have many ways to cool herself off, and she really isn’t dressed for the weather. Imagine wearing a fur coat in the heat! Read on as a Sugar Land, TX vet offers tips on keeping your kitty cool.

Keeping Fluffy hydrated is very important! First and foremost, make sure your kitty always has clean water. If you have more than one cat, or live in a large house, set out multiple water bowls. Your furry buddy may also appreciate a kitty fountain. (Tip: this is a great option for furballs that enjoy drinking tap water.) You can also offer your pet a bowl of cat milk or sodium-free fish, beef, or chicken broth.

Beauty Treatments

Cats are very good at keeping themselves clean. However, there’s no reason you can’t offer your furball a helping hand. Removing dust, dead fur, and dander from your feline friend’s coat will help her stay cooler.

Ice Hockey

Did you know that one of the only ways cats can regulate their temperatures is through their paw pads? Drop an ice cube onto the floor for Fluffy to bat around. This can keep your feline friend both cool and entertained!

Cool Bed

If there’s one thing cats are good at, it’s getting comfortable. Your furball will naturally seek out the coolest spots in the house. (Note: tile naturally stays cool, so don’t be surprised if you find your pet snoozing on the floor of your bathroom or kitchen.) If you really want to pamper your feline overlord, make her a kitty hammock. All you need to do is attach a piece of fabric to a table with four legs. Then, tell your pet not to use it. Fluffy will hop right in! Your kitty may also appreciate a cool water bottle on her bed, or having a sturdy fan pointed at it.

Climate Control

While we know many cats love going outside, they’re really much safer staying inside, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. Kitties face some very serious dangers outdoors! If you do let Fluffy out, keep her inside during the hottest parts of the day.
