Responsible Dog Ownership Month

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Fido is much more than just a pet: he’s part of the family! While offering your furry friend lots of belly rubs and treats will definitely help keep that cute tail wagging, good dog care goes much further than that. Read on as a local Sugar Land, TX vet discusses responsible dog ownership.

All dogs should know basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. Make sure your pup has these basics down!

Veterinary Care

Fido should see the vet at least once a year, for exams, parasite control, and vaccinations. We also recommend that dogs be microchipped and spayed or neutered. At home, keep a close eye on your canine buddy, and watch for unusual behavior or signs of sickness. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything wrong.

Man’s Best Friend has a very healthy appetite. He’s also got a very cute face, and is an absolute master at getting us to give him fatty treats! Offer your furry pal a good, nourishing diet, but don’t overindulge him. Ask your vet for specific advice.

All dogs have different grooming needs: some need daily brushings, while others need only occasional baths. Be sure to keep Fido clean! You’ll also want to keep your pup’s claws trimmed, and stay on top of his dental-care regime. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Exercise is just as important for dogs as it is for people! While Fido’s exact workout regimen will depend on his age, breed, weight, and health, most of our canine companions need at least a daily walk. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Dogs are very intelligent, and can quickly get bored and restless with nothing to do. Make sure your pooch has plenty of toys, and take time to play with him every day.

Fido can get into lots of mischief! Do some doggyproofing to make sure your home is safe for your canine friend.

Tail Wags and Belly Rubs

Fido needs to feel loved to be truly happy. Pay attention to your four-legged buddy, and spend time with him every day. Tail wags and puppy kisses are both precious gifts in our book!
