Entertaining Your Guinea Pig

Do you have a pet Guinea pig? Also known as cavies, Guinea pigs are very popular pocket pets. These cute little guys have many great qualities. They’re gentle, fun to watch, fairly inexpensive, and not difficult to care for. Providing your cavy with a clean, comfortable cage and a proper diet will see to your little furball’s basic necessities. Of course, you’ll also want to take a few steps to keep your furry pal happy and entertained. Below, a local Sugar Land, TX vet lists some easy ways to keep your Guinea pig amused.

Chew Toys

Guinea pigs have open-rooted teeth, so they need to chew to keep those choppers from growing too long. Offer your adorable furball lots of chewable playthings, such as plain wood, wicker, and cardboard items. The cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls can make great cavy toys. You can also give your little pal a tissue-box maze or a shoebox castle. Just be sure to avoid items that are stained, varnished, or painted, as well as those covered in decorations, like glitter or shells. You’ll also want to avoid anything with sharp edges or soft plastic parts.

Foraging Toys

Like most pets, Guinea pigs love snacks. There are lots of foraging snacks that can keep your pet entertained. Crumple up a plain piece of paper around a little tidbit, or stuff some fresh hay or herbs into a paper lunch sack. Or, hide some treats under plain shredded copy paper. Fun Time!

Life in a cage can get dull, even with great playthings. Let your Guinea pig out of his cage every day for a bit of supervised recess. You can set up a little pet playpen for him, so he doesn’t get into mischief. Remember to spend time with your furry pal: pet him and play with him.

Guinea pigs are actually quite sociable and friendly. Your furball may be both happier and more comfortable with a buddy or two to play with and snuggle up to. You’ll of course need a larger cage for two or more cavies, but you also get to enjoy more cuteness!
