Entertaining Your Cat

Did you know that cats can get bored? We know, boredom probably isn’t at the top of the list of concerns when it comes to keeping your kitty happy and purring. After all, cats do spend the vast majority of their time sleeping. However, our feline friends can—and do—get unhappy with nothing to do. Even the laziest furball needs some entertainment options. Read on as a local Sugar Land, TX veterinarian discusses entertaining your kitty.

Toys/Playtime

First things first: make sure your pet has lots of toys to play with and pounce on. Cats all have their own purrsonal taste in playthings: some like catnip mice, while others prefer wand toys. Offer your furball a variety, and change things out regularly to keep things fun and fresh. However, as far as Fluffy is concerned, the best cat toy of all is you! Take time every day to play with your feline buddy. It will help keep your kitty active, offer her beneficial mental stimulation, and give her a chance to practice her hunting skills.

Vertical Space

Kitties are very curious, and like to know what’s going on around them. However, Fluffy doesn’t have a very good vantage point from the ground. Get her a cat tower, or perhaps some wall-mounted pet furniture, so she can get a better view of her kingdom.

Stimulation

Mental stimulation is very important for our feline pals, and will help keep your cat’s mind healthy as she ages. Offer your pet a comfy seat before a window with a good view, so she can watch birds and squirrels. This is a great—and easy—way to beat kitty boredom! Your pet may also enjoy watching DVDs made just for kitties. If you leave Fluffy home alone, leave a radio or TV on for her. The sound of voices and music will soothe her, so she doesn’t get lonely.

Kitty Garden

While cats are both safer and healthier living indoors, there’s no reason Fluffy can’t enjoy a little taste of nature. Set out some pet-safe plants for your furball to nibble on and hide behind. You can find a complete list at the ASPCA website.
