Helping Your Dog Beat the Heat

Summer is officially here! We probably don’t have to tell you that Texas summers can be sweltering hot. This time of year can be pretty hard on our canine patients. After all, Fido is already wearing a fur coat! Here, a local Sugar Land, TX vet discusses keeping Fido cool.

Water

Make sure your canine buddy always has shade and plenty of fresh, cool water. Feel free to drop an ice cube into Fido’s bowl on hot days!

Basic Safety

You’ve likely heard this before, but it can’t be repeated often enough: never leave your pet in a parked car in hot weather. Temperatures can reach deadly levels in just moments! Keep your furry best friend cool and comfy at home, in rooms cooled by fans or AC. Better safe than sorry!

Summer Do

Some of our four-legged pals are much more comfortable with a short summer ‘do. This isn’t the right option for every dog, however. In some cases, dogs’ thick fur actually insulates them from the heat. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Walking

When it’s really hot out, walk your furry companion in the morning and evenings, when it’s cooler out. Limit Fido’s outdoor time during the hottest hours, and don’t encourage him to run or play too much until it cools off.

Paws

Fido’s paw pads are very delicate, especially when they are wet. It’s very easy for dogs to burn their feet on hot surfaces. Use paw balm or wax to protect your canine friend’s paws, and keep him on soft ground as much as possible.

Cool Snacks

Who doesn’t enjoy a cool ice cream on a hot day? Get Fido’s tail wagging by offering him the occasional frozen snack. You can buy doggy ice cream in many pet stores or grocery markets. Or, look online for great homemade options, such as pupsicles. Just be sure to only use pet-safe ingredients.

Raised Bed

Consider getting Fido a hammock bed for summer. These beds allow air to flow beneath them, so they stay cooler than regular beds.

Brushing

Brushing your pup regularly will help remove dust, dander, and dead fur from his coat. This will help him stay cooler. Don’t forget to offer Fido a treat after his beauty session!
