Happy Healthy Cat Month

Did you know that September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month? While our feline friends deserve to be happy and healthy all the time, this is a great time to talk about cat care. Below, a Sugar Land, TX veterinarian offers tips on how to keep Fluffy happy, healthy, and purring.

Entertainment

Keep Fluffy’s toy box full, and take time to play with her every day. Even just spending a few minutes chasing the red dot from a laser pointer or batting at a feather toy will benefit your feline buddy both mentally and physically. We also recommend making sure your furball has at least one comfy window seat with a good view.

Beds

We all know what Fluffy’s favorite pastime is: napping! Provide your sleepy pet with lots of soft, comfy beds to snuggle up in.

Veterinary Care

One of the best things you can do for Fluffy is make sure she goes to the vet regularly … even if she clearly would rather be napping. In addition to getting regular examinations and recommended vaccinations, cats should be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Parasite control is also important. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between visits, watch for any symptoms of illness, and call your vet immediately if you notice anything unusual.

Diet

Kitties need proper nutrition in order to thrive. Get Fluffy the best pet food you can afford, but don’t go overboard with fatty treats. Portion control is also important: even overfeeding your furball by just a little every day can cause her to pack on extra pounds. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Facilities

Keep your feline friend’s litterbox clean by scooping it daily, and changing it every week. Cats hate dirty litterboxes!

Kitty Comforts

Cats often stay home alone while their owners are out. Keep your kitty’s comfort in mind: leave a TV or radio on for her, and turn a light on if you’ll be out after dark.

Snuggles and Purrs

Love is the magic ingredient in any pet care regimen. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy. Talk to her, pet her, and oblige her requests for cuddles and attentions. You’ll be rewarded with purrs and unconditional love, which are truly beautiful gifts.
