Helping Your New Puppy Settle In

Are you adopting a puppy? Congratulations on your furry new arrival! Little Fido is bound to fill your life with love and laughter. In order to get the little one started out on the right paw in life, you’ll want to take some precautions to help him transition into his new home. Below, a Sugar Land, TX vet offers tips on helping your puppy get settled.

Shopping

Before you bring your new furbaby home, you’ll need to get some supplies. Little Fido will need toys, bedding, a leash and collar, food, treats, dishes, grooming supplies, and a first-aid kit. We also recommend getting the little guy a good crate.

Preparation

Put all of your canine buddy’s things in a quiet back room, such as a spare bedroom, at first. This will give your puppy a quiet place to settle in and get used to his new home.

Puppyproofing

Puppies are basically furry, adorable bundles of mischief. You’ll need to do some puppyproofing to keep little Fido safe. Remove or secure toxic plants; wires and cords; household and automotive chemicals; plastic bags; hard candies; and anything that could potentially be a choking hazard. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

Little Fido should start school right away. In addition to crate training and house training, puppies should learn basic obedience commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Schedule

Get little Fido started on his new schedule for walks, meals, and playtime right away. The sooner your furkid starts his new routine, the sooner he’ll become accustomed to it.

Veterinary Care

Contact your vet to schedule an exam. Fido should also be microchipped and spayed or neutered, and up to date on vaccines and parasite control. Of course, your pup’s exact veterinary care needs will depend on what he’s had done in the past. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Food

If you know what your canine pal has been eating, get that same brand for now. Consult your vet before making any changes.

Tail Wags

You’re starting off on a beautiful journey of friendship with your adorable furry buddy. Spend lots of time with little Fido. Talk to him, pet him, and play with him daily. Remember to take lots of pictures of this special time!
