Size
Size is probably the most crucial factor to consider. Polly should be able to, at the very least, stretch out her full wingspan without touching any of the cage sides. The bigger the better, however, so get the biggest cage you can afford.
Shape
There are several different types and styles of birdcages. Do thorough research on your feathered buddy’s particular species, so you know what will suit your pet best. Finches, for instance, need vertical space for flying, while birds that climb, like Cockatoos, need more height than width. Make sure the bars are spaced so that Polly can’t get her head stuck between them!
Material
Material is another crucial thing to consider. Our feathered friends can be very sensitive to certain chemicals and toxins. Cheap and/or imported cages may have been treated or coated with toxic materials. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about material! Make sure the cage is sturdy and secure, and remember to check for sharp edges or weak welding spots that could hurt your beloved pet.
Features
You’ll find all sorts of options for various add-ons and additional features. These upgrades may cost more, but many are well worth the extra money. Removable grates are highly recommended, as they make cleaning much easier. Feeder access ports should be secure enough so that Polly can’t escape when you’re giving her dinner. When it comes to perches and toys, however, you’re generally better off buying these separately, as the included starter kits are often quite basic.
Buying Used
Used cages may save you money, but avoid cages that look like they’ve been repainted. Another thing to be careful of when purchasing a used cage is the possibility that the cage’s former feathered resident had a contagious disease. Be very cautious when purchasing used cages!
